Kid friendly Mt St Helens day trip
We've done this one a hundred times. Here's the exact order, what to pack, and which visitor center to skip.
Mt St Helens is one hour from the house. With kids 6 to 12, the right plan turns it from a long day into a great memory. Here's the version we run when family visits.
Skip the Silver Lake visitor center. It's first off the highway but it's small, dated, and the views are blocked by trees. The exhibits are better at the Johnston Ridge Observatory deeper in.
Drive straight to Coldwater Lake first, about 45 miles up the Spirit Lake Highway. The boardwalk loop is half a mile, mostly flat, and the lake is dramatic. Pack snacks because the cafe is a snack bar at best.
From Coldwater, drive the last 8 miles to Johnston Ridge Observatory. This is the payoff: direct line of sight to the crater. The 25-minute film on the eruption is gripping for older kids. Rangers do a short outdoor talk every hour in summer.
On the way back, stop at Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center for the helicopter tours and the kettle corn. The helicopter ride is 25 minutes, $250 per person, and absolutely worth it once if you can swing it.
Pack layers (it's 20 degrees cooler at the observatory), a full water bottle per person, and lunch. There's a microwave at Hoffstadt if you bring leftovers. Total day: leave the house by 9 AM, back by 5 PM.
