Sunset cocktails to make on the dock

Three drinks that work with what's in the kitchen, no shaker required. Pour, sit, watch the lake turn gold.

Sunset cocktails to make on the dock

The kitchen is stocked with the basics: a jigger, a stirring spoon, ice trays. No shaker, no fancy bar tools. These three drinks work with that constraint, take about a minute each, and travel well in a thermal pitcher down to the dock.

The Horseshoe Spritz: 2 oz dry white wine, 2 oz soda water, half ounce of elderflower liqueur if there's any in the cabinet, a squeeze of lime, served over ice in a wine glass. Light, slightly sweet, low alcohol so you can have two before dinner.

Lake House Old Fashioned: 2 oz bourbon, a sugar cube (the kitchen has them), 3 dashes of bitters, a strip of orange peel. Stir in a rocks glass over a big ice cube. Best one if there's a campfire going.

Cucumber Gin Cooler: 2 oz gin, 4 oz tonic, 4 cucumber slices, fresh mint if the garden has any. Built in the glass, no shaking. Cuts heat on the warmest summer evenings.

Bring everything down to the dock in the insulated pitcher. Best sunset viewing is 30 minutes before official sunset, looking northwest from the end of the dock. The light turns the entire lake gold for about 8 minutes, then it's blue hour.
